S.T.E.A.M.

S.T.E.A.M.

The S.T.E.A.M. program at SSLS is for all students K-8. Through a mixture of classroom-based activities, special courses, and extracurricular opportunities, students will develop and strengthen their understanding of the sciences, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics and will be able to see how those subjects interconnect in the real world.

The K-2 classroom experiences are most commonly introduced through children’s books and the fictional characters of the Primary Education Thinking Skills program that expose students to convergent analysis, divergent synthesis, visual/spatial thinking, and evaluation. They will also participate in project-based learning activities that combine the S.T.E.A.M subjects in order to produce solutions to complex problems.

The 3-5 classroom experience will dive right into the cross-curricular nature of S.T.E.A.M. through multi-day units of study within core classes and special classes that continue students’ development of creative and critical problem solving skills and provide opportunities for students to learn and practice the steps of design thinking while developing solutions to real-world problems. They will also be expected to develop and present a Genius Hour project, which will be based on a topic about which they are passionate.

The 6-8 S.T.E.A.M. experiences will be offered through their core classes as well as elective options. Genius Hour, Odyssey of the Mind, and S.T.E.A.M. labs will be some of the options provided for middle school students.

The SSLS S.T.E.A.M. program will provide opportunities for students at all grade levels to showcase their work both locally and regionally, especially for those who choose to participate in the extracurricular options that are provided, such as Odyssey of the Mind.
